Pipe Relining: What it is and when to use this technique

Pipe relining is one of the most effective and least invasive solutions for repairing damaged pipelines without the need for excavation work. In buildings, industrial facilities, and sewer networks, it allows structural issues, leaks, or corrosion to be resolved while extending the service life of the existing installation.

What is pipe relining?

Pipe relining is a trenchless rehabilitation technique that consists of creating a new pipe within the existing one, using technical resins or impregnated liners that adhere to the internal walls of the conduit.

Instead of removing and replacing the damaged pipe, it is reinforced from the inside, sealing cracks, loss of cross-section, deteriorated joints, or corroded areas. The result is a continuous, watertight, and structurally sound pipeline.

This technique is applied both in underground pipelines and in building downpipes, horizontal drainage networks, collectors, or industrial pipe systems.

How does the process work step by step?

Although the method may vary depending on the type of pipe and the existing damage, the standard pipe relining process typically follows these stages:

  1. Preliminary CCTV inspection. A camera inspection is carried out to assess the internal condition of the pipe, identify damage, and determine technical feasibility.
  2. Thorough pipe cleaning. Before relining, the pipe is cleaned using high-pressure water jetting, mechanical cutting (milling), or other methods to remove deposits, grease, scale, corrosion, and debris.
  3. Liner installation. A resin-impregnated flexible liner is inserted into the pipe, or the lining material is applied internally, adapting to the pipe’s shape.
  4. Curing. The material hardens over time or through the application of heat or hot water, creating a new, jointless internal pipe.
  5. Final inspection. A post-installation camera inspection is performed to verify proper execution and ensure the system is watertight.

Advantages compared to traditional methods

Pipe relining offers clear advantages over conventional pipe replacement:

  • No demolition required, making it ideal for buildings in use.
  • Shorter intervention time, reducing disruption and operational downtime.
  • Lower overall cost, as it avoids excavation and restoration work.
  • High durability, with strong chemical and mechanical resistance.
  • Suitable for hard-to-access areas, such as service shafts, basements, or buried sections.

For these reasons, it is a particularly valued solution in residential communities, hotels, hospitals, and industrial facilities.

In many cases, beyond being the most technically suitable option, pipe relining is also the most efficient from a cost perspective. The price of pipe relining cannot be set as a standard figure, as it depends on factors such as diameter, pipe length, internal condition, and accessibility.

However, when overall costs are compared, relining is typically more cost-effective than full pipe replacement, as it avoids indirect costs associated with construction work, project timelines, and disruption to the property.

When is it the best option?

Pipe relining is particularly recommended when:

  • The pipe has cracks, corrosion, or minor breaks, but its alignment remains intact.
  • There are recurring leaks that are difficult to locate from the outside.
  • The goal is to rehabilitate the system without interrupting the building’s activity.
  • A fast intervention is required with minimal impact.
  • It involves relining building downpipes where opening walls or slabs would result in high costs and significant disruption.

However, each case must always be assessed individually through a prior technical inspection.

Limitations of pipe relining

Although it is a highly effective technique, pipe relining is not suitable for all scenarios:

  • It is not recommended when the pipe is collapsed, severely deformed, or significantly displaced.
  • It may not be feasible if the internal diameter has been excessively reduced.
  • It does not correct major design issues, such as incorrect pipe gradients.
    It also requires thorough prior cleaning to ensure proper adhesion.

Service life and maintenance

One of the most common questions is how long a relined pipe will last. When properly executed, pipe relining can provide a service life of over 40–50 years, depending on the materials used and operating conditions.

In terms of maintenance:

  • It does not require any special care beyond that of a new pipe.
  • It is fully compatible with periodic cleaning and preventive maintenance programs.
  • CCTV inspections allow its condition to be monitored over the long term.
